about

Gunaikurnai/Gippsland based indie pop-folk duo Ally Row have just released their highly anticipated new single ‘The King is just a clown’.
Based on a true experience, this empowering track follows a woman’s journey in rediscovering her self-worth and overcoming a toxic relationship.
The song’s vulnerability explores self-doubt, navigating the difficulties of feeling alone and the pursuit of personal identity.

With passionate vocals and energetic guitar in full force, the listener is transported to a motel, “room 39”, where she stands alone grappling with her choices and emotions. The heartfelt lyrics vividly paint a picture of inner turmoil as she confronts her past, her insecurities and her longing for a meaningful connection.

As the song progresses, Ally’s journey takes a triumphant turn, reflected in the uplifting instrumentation of trumpets and driving percussion; think Mumford and Sons ‘Little lion man’ high fiving Michael Buble’s ‘Haven’t met you yet’.
She refuses to be held captive by the deceit and disappointment that have characterised her experiences and in the final verse, Ally asserts her strength and newfound resolve saying “he won’t find me here”; refusing to jeopardise her self-worth in exchange for a man’s hollow promises.

Guitarist and co-songwriter Rowan Sizer says“…for many months we just couldn’t come up with a chorus, but one day we were lucky enough to be camping in Byron Bay, while lying in our rooftop tent we heard the birdsong of a honeyeater, it was such a beautiful call it became the chorus melody, We finished the song that day.”

lyrics

He paid for the motel
Im in room 39
By myself, cheap champagne on ice
This was a bad idea, but its not the first time
I shivered in my underwear
Trying not to cry,
Why am I here? Why am I here?

Another night alone
Another cardboard throne
He promised me a crown
The king is just a clown

When I want answers, he gives me guilded lies
I like that he dances, but I think he has a wife
Why am I here? Why am I here?

Another night alone
Another cardboard throne
He promised me a crown
The king is just a clown

Another bind i'm in,
Another night of sin,
He keeps letting me down
The king is just a clown

OOOhhhhhhhhs

He's not returned my calls?
What has returned is pride,
This time I won't fall, and I won't say goodbye
He wont find me here, he wont find me here

Another night alone
Another cardboard throne
He promised me a crown,
The king is just a clown

Another side to him
Another light goes dim
He won't bring me down
The queen will find her crown
